How to Choose the Best Photo for a Custom Pet Portrait

A beautiful custom pet portrait starts with a clear reference photo. You do not need professional equipment—a good phone photo is more than enough when the light, angle and expression are right.

Use bright, natural light

Photograph your pet near a window or outside in open shade. Soft daylight makes fur colour, eye shape and markings easier to see. Avoid harsh midday sun, deep shadows and dark indoor rooms.

Get down to their eye level

Portraits feel more personal when the camera is level with your pet’s face. Kneel, sit or wait until they are resting somewhere comfortable. A photograph taken from directly above can distort the head and hide the shape of the ears.

Keep the important details visible

Make sure the face is sharp and unobstructed. We want to see the eyes, nose, ears and any distinctive patches, stripes or curls. If your pet always wears a favourite collar, decide whether you want it included before choosing the image.

Send the original file

Whenever possible, email the original photograph rather than a screenshot or a version downloaded from social media. Original files contain more detail and produce a cleaner finished illustration.

Ordering more than one pet?

The animals do not need to appear together. Separate photographs are often better because you can choose the strongest expression for each pet. Try to send images taken at similar angles so the final composition feels balanced.
